Cutter burst onto the scene with Fishing Without Nets – a short film about pirates in Somalia, told from the perspective of the pirates, shot in East Africa, and cast primarily with non-actors. The short won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and was developed into a feature film using the same cast. His debut feature won Best Director at Sundance and the Roger Ebert Award for Best First Feature, before being released by VICE Studios & 20th Century Fox.
Director Cutter Hodierne’s work turns true crime stories into “morally murky contemplation(s) of deprivation and desperation,” - The New York Times about his Sundance Directing Award Winner, Fishing Without Nets.Cutter's ability to create stunning, poetic imagery and to draw performances of depth and emotion from actors are themes that run through his work. Fishing Without Nets was hailed for it's authenticity, integrity and control, and was called "Sundance's most beautiful film" by The Wrap.
Cutter's work in interactive mediums includes VR experiences like STRENGTH IN NUMBERS - NBA FINALS VR for Oculus, BERLIN WALL VR, a virtual museum exhibit for the Newseum and art-installation films like OMNIA PER OMNIA. Shortly after dropping out of college, Cutter toured the world with U2 documenting their historic 360 Tour, the highest grossing tour in music history. Cutter has also directed commercials for major brands like Intel, Microsoft, AEG and LiveNation.
Cutter spent the first years of his life on a sail boat cruising through the South Pacific Ocean before living in Japan as a young child. Cutter’s writing almost exclusively draws from true stories. The people and predicaments are almost all directly lifted from real experiences. Consequently, his work is driven by his experience as a fish out of water. His unique visual language is an extension of that curiosity and adventurous spirit.
